Textured-paper Weaving

 By Ms Florance James
The students have expressed their opinions towards this task with wide ranging emotions and vocabulary…. Wow!...what!...I love this!....it’s torture!....Why are we doing this anyway?....Actually I think I can do this…..I can’t do this!...I think I get it now!.... Somebody please tell me why I have to destroy this beautiful work by chopping it up!......Amazing!......etc
However, the students have responded to this task, it’s important to note that there have been record numbers of grade 4 students voluntarily coming into the art room during break and lunch times, to work on this. Why is this? The textured-paper weaving is fun, beautiful, challenging, and to some extent quite addictive. Unlike most tasks, which are one continuous process, this one is split into three distinct stages: creating abstract textures and outlining them with a sharpie, cutting the textures into strips and then weaving the strips into one piece. During these stages, the students are learning or reinforcing various skills and concepts. This can be fairly demanding on fine-motor skills! Some of the students describe this as torture, whilst others think it is gratifying!
For grade 4 students, this is one of the tasks, which demands the most perseverance, patience and stamina.  They are practising exactly that!
